The Housing Rehabilitation Program at the Community Service Center continues its efforts to contribute to the right to housing under humane conditions for poor families suffering from extremely difficult housing conditions. This is done in partnership with the local communities with which it works, within the available means, "which makes the waiting list long unfortunately limiting the response to the most suffering cases," says Osama Bani Odeh, program coordinator at this center affiliated with An-Najah National University. The center's efforts are currently focused mainly on cases facing difficulties in rural areas, thanks to a grant it received from the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) through the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development.

The case of the N.M. family in a village east of Nablus is an example of the center's success in investing modest financial resources and multiplying their impact through volunteer efforts and financial and in-kind contributions from the local community. In partnership with local entities, the program built an additional room to address the cramped living conditions of the family, who had previously lived in a single room. In addition, modifications were made to the outdoor bathroom and kitchen to make them more hygienic and better connected to the house in its new layout. The head of the family, a widow, said that she felt that the changes made to the house had transformed it, however small they may seem to others who are blessed with better living conditions. She expressed her gratitude to the center and its staff for their efforts in renovating the house and for treating her with respect and consulting her about the changes they were going to make before implementing them.On the other hand, Engineer Bani Odeh explained that the work in this program consists of two complementary parts: the technical engineering aspect and the social aspect. Therefore, the program's team consists of an engineer, a female engineer, a social worker, and a social specialist who collaborate on preparing the preliminary report and planning the required intervention. The program coordinator added that in this case, for example, a technical and social report was prepared, based on which it was decided to allocate the minimum contribution to the rehabilitation of the house from the aforementioned grant, which would not have been sufficient. In-kind assistance was obtained from the local community, in addition to a contribution from the Multaqa Al-Khair Fund, one of the center's programs.

The center's director, Mr. Bilal Salama, pointed out that this case and the method used to help it illustrate the center's philosophy of working with those in need rather than on their behalf, applying a human rights-based social work model that relies on participation and empowerment by working with and for people as an approach to community service.
