As part of its ongoing community efforts, the Community Service and Continuing Education Center at An-Najah National University recently rehabilitated two homes for families in need in the city of Nablus and the town of Asira al-Shamaliya. This work is part of the center’s established program dedicated to improving housing conditions for vulnerable households.

The first home belonged to a family consisting of a divorced mother and her two daughters. The rehabilitation was carried out in cooperation with the Women’s Studies Center in Nablus. The family had recently moved to a new home with the center’s support and was struggling with difficult living conditions. Issues such as damaged bathroom and kitchen facilities, severe moisture leakage, and mold on the walls were addressed and repaired.

The second home belonged to a family from Asira al-Shamaliya consisting of a father with disabilities, a mother, and four children. The house was in very poor condition, requiring extensive intervention. The team rehabilitated an abandoned room that was unfit for living, installed floor tiling, replaced old windows with aluminum ones to prevent cold drafts and rainwater leakage, and repaired the electrical wiring.

Funding for these projects was provided by the Good Forum Committee Fund affiliated with the center.

Engineer Osama Bani Ouda, the program coordinator, explained that due to the lack of external funding, the center’s team and volunteers rely on mobilizing local resources. Support comes through donations from community members, both financial and in-kind, as well as contributions collected through “Goodness Cards” distributed by students enrolled in the Community Service course. He noted that these efforts made it possible to rehabilitate more than thirty homes in Nablus and its surrounding villages over the past year, benefiting families living in poverty, elderly individuals, and households headed by women. Several additional cases were completed in partnership with student groups from the Engineering and Society course and other volunteer initiatives. Engineer Bani Ouda also stated that many cases remain on the program’s waiting list.

Mr. Bilal Salama, Director of the Community Service and Continuing Education Center at An-Najah National University, confirmed the center’s ongoing commitment to rehabilitating homes for marginalized groups. He emphasized that safe and healthy housing is a basic human right and highlighted the university’s dedication to improving the health, living, and social conditions of vulnerable families.

Mr. Salama added that the center’s work follows professional standards in social work rooted in human rights principles, which have guided all of its programs since its establishment.
