For more than three years, Belgian volunteer Harry Michiels has dedicated his time to volunteering at the CSC of An-Najah National University. His volunteer work is very diverse, ranging from visiting wounded children in hospitals after the Israeli invasion of Nablus in April 2002 to beautifying the windows of houses in the Old City by providing flower pots for windows and mashrabiyas through a program titled "Nablus, City of Flowers... City of Peace."

In his latest initiative, Harry formed a team of young volunteers, including An-Najah University students and graduates from the town of Tamoun, to plant trees in a children’s park and the garden of a local school. Tree and flower planting appeals to Harry because he sees it as a meaningful act of solidarity with the Palestinian people, especially children, while also raising awareness about the importance of trees and environmental conservation.

Professor Sami Kilani, director of the CSC, said, “Harry is considered part of the center’s staff. He is a volunteer who dedicates his time and effort, sometimes even using his limited retirement income to purchase seedlings and flowers for his projects. He also works to secure support through the Belgian Consulate General in Jerusalem, which has backed his ‘City of Flowers’ program, developed in collaboration with another Belgian volunteer, Dr. Robert Laviel.”

When asked why he chose Tamoun for this initiative, Harry explained, “I have many friends in this town, including university students, and I visit them regularly. Because Tamoun faces many challenges, I wanted to offer this small contribution. I hope this initiative inspires other residents to take similar actions. I’m also pleased that our team is growing, starting from just five members.”

Reflecting on his motivations, Harry added, “After spending three years in Palestine, I understand the importance of giving, even in small ways, as a gesture of solidarity. My greatest reward is the friendship and smiles of the children I meet in the Old City of Nablus or in Tamoun, waving to me and saying, ‘Hello, Harry!’”
