The Housing Rehabilitation Program, part of the Community Service and Continuing Education Center at An-Najah National University, continued its work to improve the health and environmental conditions of homes for low-income families.
During the first half of 2019, the program completed 17 cases, primarily funded by the Multaqa Al-Khair Fund, which receives contributions from friends of the center and revenue from the Al-Khair Card marketed by students of the community service course, in partnership with local organizations. The cases included five homes in Nablus, 11 in surrounding villages, and one in Tulkarm Camp, covering 11 poor families, two elderly women, and four women-headed households.
Notable Cases:
● N.S., Qabalan: A woman supporting a family of five lived in a modest, un-tiled home. In partnership with the Qabalan municipality and local entities, the program fully tiled the floors and the walls of the kitchen and bathroom.
● J.A., Old City of Nablus: A poor family of four lived in a two-room house with a bathroom but no kitchen. The program built a kitchen in the front yard, roofed it with zinc, and tiled the second room to make it suitable for sleeping.
● B.D., Tulkarm Camp: An elderly couple lived in a modest home lacking basic amenities. Volunteers installed a zinc roof over the front yard and supported general home improvements.
● N.S., Habla Neighborhood: An elderly woman with kidney failure lived with her three daughters and grandson in a one-room home. The program renovated the sanitary unit, added a small extra room, and upgraded the house’s sanitary facilities to meet basic health standards.
Other interventions included engineering consultations and follow-ups for additional families in need.
Mr. Osama Bani Odeh expressed appreciation for all contributions, whether through financial donations or volunteer work. Mr. Mohammed Al-Jitan, social worker at the center, praised the staff, volunteers, and generous donors, emphasizing that adequate and healthy housing is a fundamental right for every citizen.
